This is a nice looking old musket that could have been used by either side of the American Civil War. It is an original .69 caliber smoothbore musket. Many of this pattern weapons were used during the War because it is what the states had in the arsenals when the war broke out. This one has the maker’s mark stamped into the lockplate. It has the mark of Asa Waters who was located in Millbury, Massachusetts. It also has the production date stamped behind the lockplate of 1836. Waters is best known for making military single shot pistols. He made these weapons from 1817 until 1836 and produced the respectable quantity of 36,560 according to Flayderman’s guide. The action still works well on both positions. The barrel is 41-5/8ths inches in length and has part of the original front sight intact. At the breech of the gun you can clearly see the correct and matching 1836 production date. The stock has a very pleasing medium tone to the walnut wood. On the flat of the stock opposite of the lockplate you can still see the inspector cartouche stamps. This is where the government inspector approved the weapon for military service. The stock was trimmed off at the rear barrel band and it is priced accordingly. You can tell by the patina that it was done eons ago. The ramrod is missing in action. You can see underneath the barrel where it has a ramrod channel welded in place somewhere along the line. This is an attractive gun for over the mantle that doesn’t cost the price of a house.
