This is an original excavated cuff button from the War of 1812. This is the version with the script style letter "I" on the face with the star in the oval below. As you can see the face on this button almost looks like the soldier bit the button for some reason before he discarded it. The button is made of pewter and this one is a very nice display piece. It is missing the original pewter shank from the reverse. This piece came from the collection of Duncan J. Campbell who co-authored the Headgear Insignia book and also the Military Buckle book with Mike O'Donnell. This is the style listed as GI36AV in Albert’s button book. This is a nice and authentic War of 1812 Infantry Uniform button.
