"Fighting McCooks" Autographed CDV of Union General Alexander McCook

This is an authentic CDV image of Alexander McDowell McCook (1831-1903). Alexander McCook was the highest ranking of the famous "Fighting McCooks" of the Civil War. He was born in Columbiana County Ohio. On April 22, 1831. He graduated from West Point in 1852, where he went on to teach tactics at the school until the outbreak of the Civil War. His 1st Civil War service was as Colonel of the 1st Ohio volunteer infantry. He received his promotion to Brigadier General on September 3, 1861 and became a Major General the next July. He commanded a the 2nd division of the Army of the Ohio under Don Carlos Buell. He was at the capture of national, the battle of Shiloh and the siege of Corinth. He led the 20th Corps during the battles and campaigns of Perryville, Murfreesboro, Tullahoma and Chickamauga. He received much of the blame for the union Army's loss at the battle of Chickamauga. After the Civil War, he served on the frontier, where he was an aide to General William Tecumseh Sherman. These CDV images were an important part of history from the Civil War era. It was the first practical way to bring images of a famous personality home to the regular people. The people wanted to be able to put a face with the names they read about in the newspapers. You could order through newspaper ads or at local photography studios, several images of famous personalities for a reasonable amount. The CDV images were made by applying a thin paper photo image of the famous person of the day to a heavier paper card. This made the image more durable and easier to display and also added uniformity to the size. The overall size of a CDV image is approximately 2.5 inches by 4 inches in size. What makes this image extra special is that it is autographed on the bottom of the card in beautiful Brown ink. What a fantastic addition to an already wonderful image. It is a fine Original CDV that will make a solid addition to any Civil War collection.
