This is an original Civil War era CDV image of Civil War Brevet Brigadier General Joseph Roberts. Roberts was born in Middletown, Deleware on December 30th 1814. He graduated the US Military Academy with the class of 1835. During the Civil War. He served the artillery. He started out in the 4th US artillery and then was chief of artillery of the 7th Corps in the Department of Virginia. He also served as Colonel of the 3rd Pennsylvania Heavy Artillery. And then as Commandant at Fort Monroe, Virginia. He received his brevet rank of Brigadier General on March 13 and again on April 9, 1865, for his "faithful and meritorious services". When we say he is a "Brevet" Brigadier General this means that because of his service to the country he was awarded the rank as an honor. This is a bust view of the general in a stately pose. The CDV images were made by applying a thin paper photo image of the famous person of the day to a heavier paper card. This made the image more durable and easier to display and also added uniformity to the size. The overall size of a CDV image is approximately 2.5 inches by 4 inches in size. On the back of the card, it has the Philadelphia photographer mark of the firm of Wendroth, Taylor & Brown. This is a solid original Civil War Union CDV image.
