This is a neat and affordable artillery piece! It is an original powder bag punch for field size Civil War cannon. You see these occasionally and non-excavated condition but finding one that is excavated is quite scarce. Once the powder bag was loaded in the cannon barrel behind the shell and you were ready to shoot the gun. This long wire punch was used to pierce the bag so the spark from the friction primer could set off the charge to shoot the shell. On one end it would have had a sharp point to pierce the bag but that has chipped off long ago. On the other end it has the ring to make it easier to hold on to during the action. This one measures 7 inches overall. The verbal history that accompanied this piece is that it was recovered years ago on private property near the battle of Spanish Fort, Alabama which is just outside of Mobile, Alabama. It is in nice excavated condition and displays quite well.
