This is a fine non-excavated original coat size state of Maine 3 piece staff officer uniform button. The face has the beautiful state seal of Maine with no pushes at all. The Maine state seal depicts a shield on a white pine tree which has been associated with New England since colonial time with a moose below. On one side it has the figure with the reaping hook in hand and on the other side of the shield it has the sailor with the anchor. Above the image it has the Northern star design and below the star it has the motto of the state "Dirigo” which means "I direct” referring to the Northern star. Below the shield it has the proud "MAINE” in bold letters within a banner. The original back and shank are present with the correct Civil War backmark of "SCOVILL MG CO WATERBURY”. The book show this small letter die variation was used by the Scovill firm during the 1850s. This is a fine non-excavated Maine state seal uniform button. This is the version listed as ME1 in Albert’s Button book and ME200A1 in Tice’s button book. This is a nice looking authentic Civil War Maine state seal button.
