This is an original imported version of the Civil War era artillery short sword. These fierce looking weapons were patterned after the Roman style gladiator swords. This pattern was imported and used by soldiers on both sides of the war. The blade is almost full-length with the French style proof marks stamped into the metal at the base of the blade. The tip of the blade is slightly rounded from use. The brass on the cast hand guard has a fine look all over with a rich golden honey tone color. On the underside of the hand guard it has a star stamp as well as another French proof mark. The scabbard is missing in action as they so often are since they were made of fragile leather and brass. This is a nice looking Civil War imported sword that could have been used by either side during the Civil War and is offered a nice price.
