This is an original screw style gun worm for a Civil War era musket. This is the style with the long shank. These were used for the cleaning out of the musket bore. They held a wad of tow (the fiber of flax, hemp or jute). This tow has then used for regular maintenance of bore cleaning. They could also be used for the extracting a bullet if there was a problem with firing or any other reason they needed to pull the bullet out. It is like the one illustrated on page 42 of the 2nd volume of the gun tool book by Dorsey and Shaffer. They state that these were likely made for the large number of Germanic pattern muskets imported into the US for the Civil War. This particular worm is most closely like specimen C in the photograph. This one is in excellent non-excavated condition and you get the exact one that you see pictured.
