This is an excellent original Springfield musket tumbler punch. On page #191 of the 2nd volume on Gun Tools by Dorsey & Shaffer, they state that this version with the longer tapering prongs are likely earlier in production than their short tapering counterparts. This is the version that is most often found excavated in campsites. This one is in superb non-excavated shape and still turns. These were used to work on the muskets in various different ways for disassembling the gun for repair. Every Civil War Springfield gun would have had one of these. This is a must have for your for you Civil War musket.
