Here is a tough to find piece of hat insignia. It is the version that is illustrated on the bottom of page 304 in the O'Donnell and Campbell book on military headgear insignia. It shows the shield with the 13 stars and the wreath border. It also has the large wreath that was to be placed on the hat just below the shield. In the book they state that these are the Marine Corps pattern of 1859 and that they were used until 1875. Over the years there have been some of these surface that never had any of the attachment loops applied to the back but are 100% authentic. They are likely new old stock pieces that were made but never issued since there were relatively so few Marines in service at that time. The shield measures 3-1/2 inches by 3-3/4ths inches in size at the widest points. The large wreath measures 6 inches by 3-1/2 inches in overall size. This is a fine piece of headgear insignia that is tough to find these days.
