Here is a very tough item defined. This is an original Civil War era horse saddle similar to those that are illustrated on pages 68 and 69 of the wonderful saddle book by Stephen Dorsey and Kenneth McPheeters, entitled the American Military Saddle, 1776 – 1945. This is the pattern of saddle that is referred to as a "Morgan Muley" saddle. As they explain in the book the word "Muley" has nothing to do with mules, but comes from the French word meaning "without horn" or "horn less". This is a smaller size that measures roughly 15 inches by 10 inches and stands 7 1/2 inches tall. The frame of the saddle, referred to as the "saddle tree" is covered with the smooth rawhide material. This one retains the majority of the rawhide with the heavily worn look. The portions of the saddle that received the most wear were reinforced with hand tooled standard leather pieces. This one still retains some of the original ornamental rosettes. There are also the 2 straps coming off of the sides. You can tell that this one saw a good bit of service but still displays quite well as you can see. We acquired this piece from a collection in Missouri.
