This is a great displaying pair! It is an original set of uniform shoulder insignia. They aren't quite old enough to be Civil War. The pieces probably date from the Spanish American War to World War 1 timeframe. Each of the boards has the single bar on each side of the center of the board that denotes the rank of First Lieutenant. It has the red background of the piece lets us know that it was used by the artillery branch of service. On the back of the strap you can see the inner part of the strap construction. They are the style that would have been sewn on so it never had attachment hooks. Each shoulder strap measures 3-7/8ths inches by 1-5/8ths inches in overall size. They make a very fine display for any collection.
