This is one of the most elusive of all Civil War artillery projectiles. This is the version that is illustrated and described on page 277 of the 1993, revised edition of the Field Artillery Projectiles of the American Civil War, by Tom Dickey and Peter George. This is the 3.67 inch diameter "Experimental Read Blind Shell" these were designed to be fired out of a rifled 6 pound bore cannon. As they state, this projectile was patented on November 27, 1857. The inside of the shell is field with sand from the foundry which was designed to expand from the cannon blast through 6 small holes on the bottom of the shell. The soft metal sleeve on the body of the shell was designed to explode from the gases inside. Since the shell would not explode on its own, it is referred to as a "blind" shell. This one is 100 percent complete with the solid iron pin nose design. The shell measures approximately 9 inches tall. In the book, they refer to these as being a rarity of 10 out of 10, which is as rare as they come. This is your opportunity to own a very rare original Read patent projectile.
