This is a tough to find buckle. It is the pattern that is listed as figure #1015 in the wonderful buckle book by O’Donnell & Campbell. This is the belt buckle that was worn by the enlistedmen of the United States Navy during the Civil War. The buckle itself is a cast iron piece that was painted using black lacquer paint to keep them from rusting in the salt air. It has an iron piece of metal folded over the center bar that was riveted on one end to the belt itself. The other side has a ribbed texture that was designed to pinch the belt against the edge of the buckle to keep it up. What a great Civil War Naval Item!
