Here is a sword that you don't see offered very often these days. This is the original Civil War medical staff officer sword. Officially known as the US model 1840 medical staff sword this is the classic style that was worn by the doctors of the Civil War era. The blade is 28 inches in overall length with an attractive look all over. You can still clearly see the etching on each side of the blade. The front of the blade has the floral and geometric etching as well as the eagle and "E PLURIBUS UNUM" etching on both sides. On the back of the blade it has the more floral and patriotic designs etched. The sword is made without a maker's mark so it could be sold by any retailer without advertising for the actual maker. These swords have a beautifully ornate handle and cross guard. The cross guard has the shield in the center and as you can see it still has the applied German silver "MS" letters. These letters stand for the medical service branch of the Union army. The cast brass handle has the beautiful droop wing style union Eagle on the front side. The Eagle holds the arrows of war in one talon in the branch of peace and the other. At the very top of the sword it is all held together by the tang nut that is designed in the form of an acorn. All of the brass has a beautiful rich patina as you can see in the pictures. The sword is accompanied by the original scabbard that is constructed entirely of brass. The scabbard still retains all three sword hanger rings as well as the drag on the bottom of the sword scabbard. As you can see the mounts and drag have the beautiful designs to accentuate the sword itself. The throat is still present at the top of the scabbard. You can tell by the wear on the scabbard that this one was actually used but was never abused. If you wanted an original Civil War medical staff officer sword and scabbard then this one is for you.
