This is a very fine original non-excavated coat size button listed as figure MS104 in Albert’s button book and MS218a1 in Tice’s button book. It is also listed in Albert's button book as PA48 and in Tice's book as PA235A1. This is because these buttons were on coats presented to the 18th Massachusetts and 83rd Pennsylvania because of their excellence in the grand review of General McClellan held in the winter of 1861-1862. Tice lists that the buttons "…were probably used by the 62nd Pennsylvania and the 49th & 72nd New York.” The button is made of cast pewter and has the beautiful Union style eagle on the front with stars along the edge. The back has original shank intact and the backmark is correct with CORDER FRERES / PARIS". This is a great looking non-excavated rare Civil War coat size 23mm button.
