This is a cuff button that was used by the artillery of the state of New York. It is the pattern listed as NY20 in Albert’s button book and as an unlisted version of NY210Uncl As in Tice’s button book. This means that this version is scarce enough that he wasn't able to examine one for the book.The face of the button has a beautiful flying eagle with a shield coming from her beak. Above her it has the "EXCELSIOR” motto and around the bottom it has "NATIONAL GUARD”. The ribbon below the shield has the "N.Y.S.A.” for New York State Artillery. It has the original back and shank present are present as you see in the picture. The maker mark is from the famous firm of Young Smith & Co. This is a very nice displaying non-excavated cuff button.
