Here is a sword that you dont see offered very often. This is the 2nd contract of artillery saber made by the firm of Schnitzler & Kirschbaum. They are distinctively marked crown and the "FW on the top of the spine of the blade with the letter "G. It also has the "48" stamp which denotes the 1848 date of production. The blade is full-length with the smooth surface pitting from the years in the attic. The bras hand guard and pommel cap have a very thick patination build-up. The handle of the sword is present but you can tell it was heavily used. You can see the wood over most of the handle with an excellent amount of the original leather as well as the entire double twist brass wire wrap. The sword is accompanied be the original metal scabbard. This is the correct early style pattern scabbard that goes into the recesses area in the brass handguard. The scabbard has both of the mounts and rings and the original drag. This is one that you can see has seen a good bit of service but is a tough to find version of Civil War artillery saber.
