This is a neat piece! It is an original Civil War Confederate used belt buckle. This is the pattern that is one of the many simple yet effective buckles that were formed out of pre-Civil War military belt buckles they already had on hand. This one that was altered from a Pre-Civil War 2 piece artillery belt buckle. The 2-piece interlocking belt buckle would have originally had the "US" on the front disc of the tongue. If you notice on the loop of the tongue, you can still see the "STORMS" maker mark. When it was originally made it would have been made by the New York firm of C.S. Storms. For Confederate use, it has had the letters removed off of the tongue. This style of alteration is illustrated as Plate 069 in Mullinax' Book on Confederate Belt Buckles & Plates. He notes that there are several photographs of Confederates wearing this style of alterations. This one is just the way that it came out of the ground but you can tell by the patinas that they were found a part but they look nice together. They have never had any restoration or alterations of any kind. This buckle came from the award winning collection of Don Phillips. His Confederate Belt Buckle display won numerous awards at the biggest Civil War shows across the country. This is your chance to own a cool Confederate used belt buckle from Don Phillips' "Best of Show" award winning collection.
