This is an authentic original non-excavated brass "false embroidered” officer style hunting horn hat insignia from the Civil War. The hunting horn design was used by the Infantry branch of service throughout the Civil War. This pattern is made to look like an embroidered hat insignia. It is made of stamped brass and at one time it retains traces of the original gold gilding in the recess of the display side. On page #152 of the headgear insignia book by Campbell and O'Donnell it has similar style of this popular infantry officer's false embroidered horn hat pin. This one has a wonderful look. On the back of the piece it has none of the brass attachment prongs and doesn't appear to have ever had any. It could have been one intented to have been sewn onto the hat. This is a nice displaying piece of Civil War infantry history.
