This is a beautiful Button! It is the 20mm coat button that would have been work by a member of the Charlotte Military Institute. This is the version that is listed in Albert's button book as SU55 and in Tice's button book as NC280A1. Tice states that these buttons would have been made by Scovill around 1860. The face of the button has the crossed saber and pen design and across the top reads "CHARLOTTE" with "M" and "I" below and "N.C." on the bottom. The face is in superb shape with beautiful gold remaining. On the reverse of the button it has the original back and shank intact. It has the Civil War period "SCOVILL MFG CO / WATERBURY" backmark. This is a great piece for your button collection.
