This is an original brass I.D. stencil from a Civil War soldier. These thin brass stencils were sold by the stores or sutlers in the field so that they soldiers could mark their possessions. This was necessary because so many of the items were the same. This one measures 4 inches by 1-5/8ths inches. It reads "WILBER ALLEN CO. H. 2. N.Y. ART." According to the verbal history that accompanied this piece it was recovered in the area of the Battle of the Wilderness, Virginia. The records show that Allen enlisted in January of 1864 as a private and was only 19 years old. He served until June of 1865. A brief print out of his service and the regimental history accompany the piece at no extra charge. It is also displayed inside a 6 by 8 inch riker box. It will enhance any Civil War artifact collection.
