This is a great piece of Confederate history. It is the non-excavated example of the coat size Confederate cavalry button listed as figure CS142 in Albert’s book and CSC243b1 in Tice’s button book. This one is in excellent shape with the brass front that has the block style "C” that denotes the Cavalry branch of service. The original back and shank are intact as well and both are in superb shape. This is the pattern with the tinback and the iron shank. You see these in excavated condition fairly regularly but it isn’t often you get a chance at one in non-dug condition like this beauty.
