This is a scarce maker mark on this button. It is a pretty non-excavated Civil War Confederate officer coat button. This is the pattern listed as figure CS81 in Albert’s button book and CSG203B1 in Tice’s button book. This is a tough version of the "CSA’ button to get a chance at. It is the imported style with the block letter "CSA” on the front. It has the correct Civil War "S. BUCKLEY & Co. BIRMINGHAM” backmark and a fine shank. You see quite a few of these with the superior quality backmark but this version is quite scarce. It has a nice "straight out of the attic" patina all over that makes the letters stand out boldly. This button is one of the high quality English made items they would have imported through the Union blockade to sell to the well-to-do Confederate soldiers. This is a fine original button that would be a solid addition to any collection.
