This is a nice matching pair of original Infantry 2nd Lieutenant’s Civil War officer shoulderboards. These are the Smith Patent style version but are completely unmarked. They are still clearly marked with the James Smith and the 1861 patent mark. It also has their address in New York City of 15 Dutch Street. They have have the thick backing to make them more durable and hold their form correctly. These are for the rank of 2nd Lieutenant because of the open field in the center of the board inside of the brass border. We know that these are for the Infantry branch of service because of their blue color in the center that still retains a beautiful tone that has aged to the light blue flavor. A good bit of the blue background is missing from age as you can see in the pictures. Each board measures 4 inches by1-5/8ths inches in overall size, which is the nice large Civil War size. They will make a nice addition to your Civil War Infantry display.
