This is a nice authentic excavated original Civil War boxplate from a soldier’s cartridge box. This is the plate that went on the outer flap not only for decoration but to help keep the flap closed. It has the crystal clear " US” letters on the front with a very pleasing look all over. The brass has been cleaned long ago which makes the letters show up quite boldly. Both of the two original iron loops are missing off of the back and it has a good original lead. The verbal history is that this plate was recovered near the battle of Cold Harbor, Virginia. The Battle of Cold Harbor was fought from May 31 to June 12, 1864, just outside of Richmond, Virginia. It is a fine displaying piece of Civil War history!
