This is a very tough to find version of an original excavated Civil War company hat letter insignia. This is the letter "E” which would stand for the "E” company designation in the regiment. These are tough to find since the Company "E”shave the shape that breaks apart easily when they were lost. It is made out of stamped brass and it measures 1-1/8ths of an inch by 1 inch in overall size. It has a wonderful untouched excavated tone to the brass and even has the remnants of the solder on the reverse. This is where the original attachment loop was at one time but is missing as they so often are. The verbal history that accompanied this piece was found near the battle of Chancellorsville, Virginia. This is a fine excavated piece of insignia.
