What a great piece! It is an original Civil war bridle bit for a horse! This is the rare version that is known to collectors as the U.S. Model 1863 artillery bridle bit. When was the last time that you saw this style offered for sale? This one is in excellent shape and is nice enough to use today. These bits have the high port bar on one side but the front bar has strap loops instead of the large circular loops like the usual bits that you encounter. The rings are placed on the end near the strap loops. On the port bar you can still clearly see the "US" stamping. Both of the cast brass bridle rosettes are still present and as you can see they are in superb shape and they even retain a fine amount of the original gold gilding. This pattern of bit is illustrated and described on page 386 of the Dorsey and McPheeters book, the American Military Saddle, 1776 – 1945. The piece has a great look like it has been in a barn or smokehouse for a century. This is a superb piece of Civil War artillery gear.
