This is a version of the Civil War U.S. belt buckle that you seldom see offered for sale. It is the style referred to by collectors as the "Medium” size buckle. It has the overall measurements of 46mm by 78mm in overall size which puts it between the small and large size belt buckles of the Civil War. This particular pattern is listed as Plate #516 in the O’Connell & Campbell buckle book. They mention that these plates were probably purchased in the early days of the war for use with state militias. On the face of the plate it has the "US’ with a thick patina. On the reverse of the plate it has the stud style hooks intact with a fine amount of the original lead remaining. When this one was found, it was damaged and we had it restored for display purposes and it is priced accordingly. You can see in the "Before" pictures. This is a good looking excavated medium size Civil War soldier’s belt buckle.
