Here is one that you very rarely see offered for sale. It is the 1st bolt action pattern rifle accepted by the U.S. Government and it was made during the Civil War. According to Flayderman’s guide there were 1500 made for sale in the U.S. and 3,000 for a Russian contract. The U.S. ones were delivered in March of 1863 with some of the private sales going to state contracts. This gun has serial number of 3,015. This gun is of .53 caliber and it has a full-length barrel that has a pretty color all over with a pretty look as you can see in the pictures. The back of the barrel has the bolt action design and the hammer is on the underside of the barrel. You would have had to place the percussion cap on the nipple upside down which would have been hard to do. Just behind the bolt it has the very clear "GREENE’S PATENT/ NOV. 17, 1857”. stamped into the tang. The action works perfectly on all positions. On the bolt it has the serial number. The barrel is full-length with the correct original front and rear sights intact. As you can see the stock is a very attractive piece of dark walnut with a fine grain to the wood. Both of the sling swivels are present as well as the original ramrod in the channel underneath the barrel. This is an attractive and solid example of a very important weapon in the history of the U.S. military.
