This is one of my favorite patterns of Civil War staff & field officer’s swords. This is the style that was made in Germany and imported for retail sale to well-to-do Union officers. This one has a full-length blade with a nice light light tone all over. On each side it has the intricate detailed etching. The front side of the blade has the eagle pattern with the "E PLURIBUS UNUM" national motto that translates as "Of Many, One". The back side of the blade has the etching with the "US" lettering in the center. At the base of the blade it has the inlaid brass disk that reads "PROOF” this was often done by the fine sword makers of Germany. On the other side of the blade, it still has the maker's marking of W. Walscheid of Solingen, Germany still clearly visible. They manufactured many quality edged weapons during the Civil War such as this one. They would be made in Germany and imported to be sold by the quality retailers of the day. These non-regulation staff officer swords stand out from the rest because of the hand guard. It has the U.S. lettering along with the eagle design in the guard. This is the version that has the smaller eagle that is perched on top of a hunting horn. This one still has the original handle intact and as you can see it has a nice look. The wire is the double strand style made of copper and is still partially present and it displays well. A superb amount of the original rayskin grip is still present. The sword is still accompanied by the original all metal scabbard that displays quite well. It ahs both of the mounts intact as well as the rings, throat and drag. This sword has a very pleasing look and will enhance any collection.
