This is a great looking button. This is the pattern that is listed in Albert's button book as TX20 and in Tice's book as TX230A1. It has the simple but classy design of the five pointed Texas star in the center of a lined field on the face of the button. Across the top of the button it proudly states in bold letters "TEXAS" and has the wreath around the rest of the edge. There is a beautiful amount of the original gold gilding remaining on the butrton face. In Tice's book he states that these were made about 1860 just before the war by the Scovill firm in Waterbury, Connecticut. Many of the Southern states purchases buttons from Scovill just before the Civil War including Texas, Mississippi, Virginia, Georgia and South Carolina. The backmark is vividly clear and reads "SCOVILL MF'G Co WATERBURY". As you can see this is a just a great button all the way around.
