This is a beautiful original non-excavated great coat size Civil War uniform button from the artillery branch of service. These are a beautiful Civil War button. They have the Union eagle in the center with the "A” in the center of the shield on the eagle’s chest. The "A” denotes the artillery branch of service. This one has fine detail on the face. On the back of the button it has the original back and shank intact. It has the rare and desirable Civil War era RMDC backmark of "W.H. SMITH & CO. NEW YORK". This is a very nice non-dug original Civil War era uniform button with a tough to find backmark.
