This is a very fine dug Civil War Confederate artillery coat button. This is the classic artillery style uniform button that was worn by the true fighting artillerymen of the Civil War. On the front of the button it has the bold, proud letter "A” in block style that denotes the artillery branch of service. This is the version that has the tin back and brass shank and both are present on the back. This is the style listed as figure CSA243 in Tice’s book and CS117 in Albert’s button book. The verbal history is that this button was found in the area of Appomattox, Virginia where Confederate general Robert E. Lee surrendered to General Grant. This is an attractive excavated original Confederate artilleryman’s coat button.
