This is a tough to find Civil War Sharps & Hankins patent cavalry model carbine. This model 1862 carbine is one of the most distinctive weapons of the Civil War. They stand out because they have a loading action is also unique to this pattern of gun. When you drop the triggerguard the entire barrel moves forward so the single cartridge can be inserted. The frame has the remnants of the "SHARPS & HANKINS PHILADA” makers mark as well as the "SHARPS PATENT 1859” on the back side of the frame. It has the all matching serial numbers of 7,056. According to Flayderman’s guide there were only 1,000 of these 19 inch barreled army carbines made with the serial numbers being intermingled with the model 1861 rifles. They also can be distinguished from the naval Sharps and Hankins carbines because of the lack of the leather cover as well as the lack of the steel band on the front that the navy Sharps & Hankins is designed with. This particular example of this model is one of the ones that were made with the saddle ring mounted on the left hand side of the frame. The frame and other parts of the gun have been re-blued in more modern times and displays quite well as you can see. The stock has a good overall look to the original walnut wood. The front sight on the barrel is original with the rear sight still having ben replaced with the flip-up style sight of an incorrect pattern. The action of the gun clicks into position nicely. On the left hand side of the hammer it has had the sliding safety removed. The barrel still has the original lands and grooves of the rifling still visible. This is a nicely priced and cool Civil War carbine you don’t often see offered for sale.
