This is a tough to find Civil War socket bayonet. This is the bayonet for the Hall pattern military rifle. Upon 1st look they look like a regular model 1816 bayonet. When you look closer you see that the socket hole has the extra small notch on the side for the distinctive front sight of the Hall pattern rifle. This is the version that is illustrated in the Robert M. Reilly book on American Socket Bayonets and Scabbard. He states he thinks this version is for the earlier productions because of the shorter flute on the top of the blade. The bayonet has a thick patina like it spent 150 years in a barn or smokehouse or possibly was an early excavated one. It is in nice complete excavated shape and has a thick crusty patina all over. This will make a nice accessory to add to your hall rifle or to keep until you find you a rifle.
