This is a nice original Civil War dated cavalry saber. This is the classic model 1860 that was carried by the Union cavalryman. They were the mainstay of the Northern cavalrymen during the War Between the States. The sword has a full-length blade with the majority of the production date of 1865 and also has the "US” mark and the inspector initials of "J.F.”. These inspector initials, for John Ferdinand. The back of the blade has the desirable scroll style maker’s mark of the Ames Manufacturing Company of Chicopee, Massachusetts. The guard and pommel cap have a great ancient color and look to the brass. The original leather is present on the handle. The wire wrap on the handle is 100% complete and has a fine look. It is accompanied by a nice, solid original scabbard. The scabbard has the rings, mounts, drag and throat intact and is in great shape. As you can see the scabbard is in great shape as well with a dark attic color all over. This is a great looking authentic 1865 dated Ames cavalry saber with scabbard.
