Here is a superb displaying piece. This is an original officer's coat made slightly after the American Civil War. This coat is one of the very high quality manufactured coats that were sold by fine retailers. The coat itself is made of a dark blue material that has a rich color as you can see in the images. This is the ornate single breasted version and down the front it has the single row of nine coat size buttons. The buttons are the Indian War time frame style that have the American Eagle in the center with the arrows of war in one talon and the branch of peace in the other. It has the matching four buttons on the back of the coat. On the cuff of each sleeve it has the two small size buttons adorning the non-functioning cuffs. These buttons were made by the Waterbury Button Company and the Horstmann Company and are so marked on the back. On the top of each shoulder it has the matching Cavalry Lieutenant's shoulder board insignia. They are the well made versions that were popular during the period slightly after the Civil War. It has the cavalry gold int he center of the board with the gold bullion around the border. On the inside of the coat it retains the original silk and cloth lining in the chest, back and sleeves. The lining has only the slightest wear so you know the coat actually saw some service. This is a beautiful piece that costs just a fraction of what a comparable Civil War coat would cost these days.
