This is a tough to find gun! It is an original U.S. model 1866 military .50 caliber centerfire rifle of the short barrel version variety. According to Flayderman’s guide there were only 25,000 of these made in 1866 at the Springfield Arsenal. He notes that a note from Springfield refers to a "short" barrel version and that they had 1,019 on hand. Those have barrels that were 36 inches in length compared to the standard 40 inch length. This one is 28-1/4th inches to the face of the breech which is different than most but you can see it is full-length because of the placement of the front sight. They used up the model 1863 Springfield lockplate with this one has the vividly clear 1864 production date and having the proud "SPRINGFIELD” stamping. The action works on all positions. The barrel is full-length with rifling still inside and it is excellent. It has the original front and rear sights intact. The rear sight is the style that was produced with the single leaf. It has the trapdoor style loading system on the breech. The top of the breechblock has the eagle head along with the "1866” date marking. This one has had both of the sling swivels still present under the gun. It has had the original ramrod in the channel underneath the barrel replaced with a modern made replacement. The stock has an attractive dark tone to the walnut wood with the bumps and bruises from service. This is a good looking original model 1866 Allin military rifle that doesn't cost a fortune.
