This is a fine displaying excavated belt buckle. This is the classic style that was worn by the regular fighting men of the Civil War. They are very distinctive because of the stud style hooks on the back with the lead caps on the top of the stud hooks. This one is in nice excavated condition. It has all three of the original puppy paw style hooks intact on the reverse of the plate along with the majority of the original lead. The studs are the version that has the lead on the top of the stud. The brass face of the plate has a crystal clear and bold "US" lettering. The verbal history that accompanied this buckle is that it was recovered on private property near the battle of Kennesaw, Georgia. This was one of the battles were the Confederates were trying to protect Atlanta from Union General Sherman. This is a nice excavated Civil War from one of Georgia's most famous battlefields.
