This is an original excavated Civil War coat size uniform button for the state of Louisiana. The front of the button has the mother pelican turned to the side and she is feeding her young in the nest below. There is still a trace amount of the original gold wash remaining on the button’s face. This is the pattern listed as figure LA7 in Albert’s button book and as LA223a1 in Tice’s book. It isn't clear but it has the correct Civil War era maker’s mark on the back of "HORSTMANN & ALLIEN” with the rays coming from the center. You can still see traces of the rays around the shank of the button the verbal history that accompanied this button is that it was recovered several years ago in the area near Port Hudson, Louisiana. This is a beautiful and classic style of Civil War Louisiana coat button.
