This is a scarce original excavated Civil War Confederate rifleman’s coat button. This is the style that was run through the blockade from the firm of William Dowler of Birmingham, England. On the back of the button it has the back solidly intact and it was made without the William Dowler backmark. The original shank is intact and in fine shape. It is the version that was made without a maker's mark on the reverse. They did this because the retailer could sell the button without advertising for the actual button maker. The face has the large lined block letter "R”. This "R” denotes the rifleman branch of Confederate service. This pattern is listed in Albert’s button book as CS203 and in Tice’s button book as CSR203a2. The This is a very tough to find button that would be a superb addition to any collection.
