This is a very fine excavated original coat size Civil War Rifleman Eagle "R” button. This is the button that would have gone down the front of a Rifleman Officer’s coat. The eagle on the front of the button has the "R” in the shield that denotes the rifleman branch of military service. It has beautiful color to the brass on the face with a nice amount of the original gold gilding on the face that doesn’t show up in the pictures very well. On the back has the remnant of the correct Civil War Horstmann backmark. This one was recovered years ago in the Middle Tennessee area. This is a very pretty excavated Civil War rifleman Coat button.
