This is a fantastic piece of Civil War medical history! It is an original Civil War era traveling amputation medical kit. You can just image the things a piece like this kit would say if it could talk. The mahogany box is in excellent untouched original condition. It measures 16-1/2 inches across and is 9-1/4th inches deep and stands 2-1/2 inches tall. The brass center plaque is still intact. When you open the kit up you are greeted by an assortment of scalpels and tools. It has the original brass and cloth tourniquet in the left hand section. The blades are marked by the maker "SNOWDEN". He was a medical instrument maker that was located in Philadelphia. He made kits for the U.S. Army. This one would have been priovately purchased but was intended for battles wounds because of the forceps that were designed to remove a bullet. You can tell that each of the spaces were custom made for the tools that are inside. If you have ever tried to replace pieces out of a kit you find out quickly that it is almost impossible. On the top section it has the large size bone saw that lays over the top of the other limb removal saw. The snips are designed for the custom space. This is a fantastic set that displays superbly and would be appreciated by any Civil War collector.
