This is a button that is tough to get! It is the coat size uniform button from the Western military Institute. The school was founded in 1847 and located in Drennon Springs, Kentucky. In 1855 the military part of the school merged with the Nashville Military College. Most of the excavated examples come from Confederate sites. There is nice detail remaining on the face of the button. It has the crossed musket as well as the draped flags and the letters "W.M.I." The original back and shank are present as well and you can read the "RUNYAN & KEENE GEO'TOWN KY" marking still clearly visible on the reverse. There are a few variations of backmarks on this button and I have found this is one of the tougher ones to find. This is the style listed as figure SU429 in Albert's button book and KYS290A5 in Tice's button book. The verbal history that accompanied this button is that it was recovered several years ago in the Nashville, Tennessee area. This is a nice displaying tough to find Civil War Southern used cadet button.
