This is one of the most beautifully designed Civil War cadet buttons that you will encounter. This is the one listed as SU189 in Albert’s button book and as SC294a1 in Tice’s book. It is the coat size button for the Kings’ Mountain Military School that was located in Yorkville, South Carolina. The face of the button has the school name as well as the location and the date of 1855 which was when the school was started. The center of the button has the old style globe and down below the globe it has the saber crossed with a writing quill. What is rare about this button is that it is in excavated condition. You see them fairly regularly in non-excavated condition but this is the first excavated one we have ever been able to offer. This one has a fine amount of the original gold gilding remaining on the face. There is a small push that is mentioned for exactness. On the back of the button it has the original back and shank intact. It has the correct RMDC Scovill backmark. The verbal history that accompanied this button is that it was found years ago in the Richmond, Virginia area. This is a great looking Confederate used King’s Mountain cadet button.
