Here is a great piece! It is an original valise from the Civil War. These were attached to the soldier's saddle instead of using saddle bags. This saddle valise is made of leather and measures 20-3/4ths inches long. It is circular in shape and measures 7 inches across. The main body is made of one piece of leather. The ends are made of leather discs that are sewn in place. What makes this one extra special is that on each end of the valise, it had eagle breastplates added for ornamentation. These are the eagle breastplates that usually adorn the sling of Civil War cartridge boxes. When you look inside you can see that they have been there for eons. The bag has a flap that runs the length of the piece. This flap is sewn in place and is held closed by three brass closure pieces. The edge of the flap has a leather covered edge. It has the wear as you can see but still displays superbly. This is a great piece for your saddle.
