This is a very nice original Civil War era weapon! It is an attractive U.S. model 1842 military musket. These model 1842 smoothbore .69 caliber musket saw extensive service during the Civil War because many of them were still in the arsenals when the war broke out. For this reason you can make a legitimate case for soldiers on both sides of the Civil War using this version of gun. This one is from the desirable arsenal at Springfield and is so marked clearly on the lockplate to go along with the Droop wing style Union eagle. It also has the production date of 1854 clearly stamped behind the hammer. The action works perfectly on all positions. The barrel is full-length with the correct Springfield style proof marks at the breech of the barrel. There is also the first two digits of the production date stamped into the barrel. All of the marks are beautifully visible. It has both of the sling swivels present underneath the gun. It has the correct original full-length ramrod in the channel underneath the barrel. The walnut stock on this gun displays very well. It has a rich grain to the walnut with the usual great looking dark tone to the wood. There are a couple of small spots of wood repair that are mentioned for exactness but you have to look closely to see them. This is a very attractive complete displaying .69 caliber model 1842 Springfield with a crystal clear 1854 production date.
