This is a great looking original leather cartridge box for the Civil War era revolver. This is the classic military pattern worn by soldiers throughout the Civil War that will look correct when it is displayed with any style of Civil War revolver. It still has the outer flap intact as well as the closure tab and brass finial on the bottom of the box. On the back side of the box it has both of the original leather loops where the belt would have went through at one time. Between the belt loops is the fine Civil War maker mark of the Emerson Gaylord Company of Chicopee, Massachusetts. Gaylord made some of the highest quality accoutrements during the Civil War. The leather on this one has a great color with the leather being the untouched blackish brown color. What makes this one really stand out is that it has had an original eagle breastplate added to the outer flap. This is a very nice original non-excavated eagle plate that once adorned the leather shoulder sling of a Civil War cartridge box. On the face it has the spread wing eagle with arrows of war in one talon and laurel leaves of peace in the other. You can see that this one was used quite a lot but still displays well. The back has fine lead intact as well as both of the original iron loops that once affixed the plate on the leather strap. The southern soldiers referred to these plates as a "Yankee bullseye" since their position on the shoulder sling sat right in the center of the Union soldier's chests. These eagle breastplate bring almost $200 by themselves these days. You can tell that the soldier used this one but never abused it.
