This is a nice looking original CDV image of a Civil War Union soldier. The soldiers would buy these from the photographers in the cities or even from traveling photographers that would come to camp. They would purchase them in small quantities to send home to family or friends. This one shows the dashing Union soldier in his uniform. He is wearing his frock style officer's military coat. On his shoulders you can see the officer's straps with the light color inside. This would have been golden, the color for the cavalry. He holds his saber cradled in his arm. It is the classic model 1840 style cavalry saber worn by Union cavalry troopers during the war. It is the pattern known as the "Wristbreaker" cavalry saber. Around his waist, he has the eagle style sword belt buckle clearly visible. On the back of the card, it has the Philadelphia photographer marking and in pencil it has the name "Major Robert Patterson." This is a fine looking original CDV image of a Union cavalry soldier in uniform.
